Bulk Food Shelf Life and Pantry Rotation

At 15–25 °C, sealed white rice keeps 2 years or more, dried beans 2–3 years and flour 6–8 months — and those months, not jar size, should set how much you buy.

Bulk goods come without printed dates, so shelf life becomes the buyer's own arithmetic. The reference condition is a cool pantry at 15–25 °C; every month quoted here assumes that band holds.

The staples split sharply. Sealed white rice keeps 2 years or more, dried beans run 2–3 years, and flour is the short fuse at 6–8 months. In a mixed pantry, the shortest-lived item sets the tempo for everything else on the shelf.

Rotation is the procedure that makes the months real. Date every container at fill time, place short-lived staples at the front, and run first in, first out: the older batch is finished before the newer one is opened.

The named failure is the mixed batch — new rice poured over old in the same jar, which strands the older grains at the bottom past their best months. The fix is mechanical: finish, wash, dry, then refill.

Purchase size follows from the same table. One kilogram of dry rice yields roughly 2.5–3 kg cooked, and 1 kg of coffee beans yields about 55 double espressos at an 18 g dose — buy the quantity those servings represent within the shelf-life window, not the quantity that fills the jar.

The other two numbers of the format connect here: the net weight you are rotating comes from the tare-and-fill weighing on the container tare weights page, and what that weight cost per kilo is decoded on the price per kilo page.

  • Date every container on the day you fill it
  • Front-load the short-lived staples: flour (6–8 months) before beans (2–3 years) and sealed rice (2+ years)
  • Never top up: finish the old batch, wash and dry the jar, then refill
  • Hold the pantry at 15–25 °C; the quoted months assume that band
